Evidence brief

P21 peptide

Written and source-checked by Anthony Treviso, founder of The Peptide Field.

Direct answer

P21 peptide, also called P021 or P-21, is a short research compound made in a lab. Mouse studies reported learning and memory findings. A rat study measured changes in tau, a brain protein. These findings do not show that P21 works or is safe in people. No P021 study in people was found. No FDA-approved U.S. P21 product was found in the records checked.

P21 peptide is also called P021 or P-21. Its benefits and safety in people are not known.

How strong is the evidence?
Insufficient
Reliable studies in people are missing, too limited, or do not support the claim. This does not prove that the substance has no effect on the body.
What evidence exists?
Preclinical or formulation evidence
The research used cells, animals, or product-form tests. It does not establish benefit or safety in people.

Four questions about the evidence

Benefits in peopleDid people have a meaningful health benefit?
UnclearThe product identity, evidence, or reporting is not reliable enough to judge.

No P021 study in people was found in the searches completed on August 30, 2026.

Body changes in peopleDid a study measure how it changed the body in people? This alone does not show a health benefit.
UnclearThe product identity, evidence, or reporting is not reliable enough to judge.

Studies measured effects in mice, rats, or cells. They do not show what happens in people.

Known risksHow much do studies tell us about risks in people?
UnclearThe product identity, evidence, or reporting is not reliable enough to judge.

Animal findings cannot set a safe amount or show uncommon or long-term harms in people.

Exact productHow certain are the product identity and quality?
UnclearThe product identity, evidence, or reporting is not reliable enough to judge.

FDA identifies the chemical record. A product name alone does not show what is in the product or how it was made.

02 · Identity

What it is

P21 peptide is a short research compound made in a lab. It is also called P021 or P-21. It is based on four amino acids from a human protein that supports some nerve cells. Amino acids are small parts that can join to make peptides and proteins. Researchers added one changed amino-acid-like part. Papers count the parts in different ways. This page uses the FDA record to keep the identity clear.

Scientific group: Nerve-growth research compound. This group name describes the type of molecule or body signal. It does not prove a benefit, safety, or approval.

03 · Exact product

The molecule is not the finished product.

Formulation: The finished product's ingredients and physical form. Route: How the product enters the body. Indication: The approved or studied use and group of people for a product.

Approved products

None identified in the United States.

What the research shows

What the evidence shows

A 2010 mouse study reported changes in learning, memory, and the growth of new brain cells. Later mouse studies reported changes in memory, nerve-cell connections, tau, or amyloid. Tau and amyloid are proteins studied in Alzheimer’s disease. An aged-rat study measured lower tau after P021 treatment. A cell study and another mouse study had mixed results. None of these studies tested P21 in people.

What remains unknown

No P021 study in people was found. The reviewed evidence does not show whether it improves memory, prevents dementia, or treats Alzheimer’s disease in people. It also does not establish a safe amount, long-term effects, or the quality of products sold with this name. Tests in human-derived cells happen in a lab. They are not studies in people.

Exact product

FDA lists P-21, P021, and P21 under one chemical record. This record does not prove that a sold product contains the same compound used in a study. A name alone does not prove what is in a product or whether it was made safely.

Mechanism and biomarkersHow a substance changed the body or a lab measurement. This may not show a health benefit.

“In FDA’s record, P21, P021, and P-21 are names for the same chemical record.”

Supported with scopeThe reviewed evidence supports this exact statement only in the situation described below.

Yes. FDA lists P21 and P021 as names for the P-21 chemical record. This name match does not prove that a sold product has the same contents or quality.

Evidence used
Regulatory or product record. This answer uses an official regulator record or a specific product label.
Limits of this answer
The FDA chemical identity record; this does not establish drug approval, product quality, or human benefit. This answer covers only the named molecule and finished product. It also covers the product form and how people used it. The study limits include who took part, what was used for comparison, what changed, and how long the study lasted.

“P21 improved learning and memory in mouse studies.”

Supported with scopeThe reviewed evidence supports this exact statement only in the situation described below.

Yes. Studies reported learning or memory findings in normal mice and in mouse models of Alzheimer-like disease. Results in mice do not prove a benefit in people.

Evidence used
Preclinical evidence. This answer uses research in cells, animals, or other settings outside patient care. It does not show a benefit in people.
Limits of this answer
Normal adult mice and genetically changed mouse models; not people with memory problems or Alzheimer’s disease. This answer covers only the named molecule and finished product. It also covers the product form and how people used it. The study limits include who took part, what was used for comparison, what changed, and how long the study lasted.

Clinical outcomesWhat a study measured about people's health, symptoms, or ability to function.

“P21 improves memory or treats Alzheimer’s disease in people.”

Not establishedThe reviewed evidence does not establish this statement. This does not prove it can never be true.

The reviewed studies used mice, rats, or cells. The P021 registry search found no study in people. Animal or cell findings cannot show that P21 treats people.

Evidence used
No reliable human outcome evidence. No reliable study in people shows the health outcome in this statement.
Limits of this answer
Memory or Alzheimer’s disease outcomes in people who received a verified P21 study product. This answer covers only the named molecule and finished product. It also covers the product form and how people used it. The study limits include who took part, what was used for comparison, what changed, and how long the study lasted.

Approval and statusWhether a specific product has an approval or another official status.

“A P21 substance record means P21 is FDA-approved.”

MisleadingThis statement leaves out a limit that changes its meaning.

FDA says a Unique Ingredient Identifier, or UNII, helps identify a substance. It does not mean that FDA reviewed or approved a drug. No FDA-approved P21 product was found under the reviewed names.

Evidence used
Regulatory or product record. This answer uses an official regulator record or a specific product label.

“P21 peptide is the same thing as the p21/CDKN1A protein.”

MisleadingThis statement leaves out a limit that changes its meaning.

No. P21 peptide is a small compound made in a lab. CDKN1A is a human gene. It makes a protein also called p21. The shared short name does not make them the same.

Evidence used
Regulatory or product record. This answer uses an official regulator record or a specific product label.

SafetyWhat is known and not known about harm, warnings, and safety limits.

“P21 has a proven safety profile in people.”

Not establishedThe reviewed evidence does not establish this statement. This does not prove it can never be true.

The P021 registry search found no study in people. Animal studies cannot set a safe amount, rule out uncommon harm, or show long-term safety for people.

Evidence used
No reliable human outcome evidence. No reliable study in people shows the health outcome in this statement.
