Why oxytocin is a peptide
Peptides contain amino-acid units linked through peptide bonds. The number of units can vary.
PubChem describes oxytocin as a cyclic nonapeptide hormone. Nonapeptide means that its sequence contains nine amino-acid units: Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly.
The two cysteine units form a disulfide bridge. That bridge makes part of the peptide chain into a ring. It does not remove the peptide bonds that define the molecule as a peptide.
Why cyclic does not mean non-peptide
Some peptides are linear chains. Others contain a ring formed by a bond between units in the chain.
Oxytocin has both a peptide sequence and a disulfide-linked ring. The cyclic shape is part of its structure, while the amino-acid sequence identifies its peptide class.
