Is vasopressin a peptide?

The short answer

Yes. Human arginine vasopressin is a nine-unit peptide hormone. UniProt's 164-unit entry describes the precursor that also yields neurophysin II and copeptin.

Why vasopressin is a peptide hormone

The reviewed human UniProt record names the processed molecule Arg-vasopressin. IUPAC defines peptides by their amino-acid bonds. Endotext describes vasopressin as a hormone. Peptide describes its structure; hormone describes its role in the body.

UniProt marks a bond between cysteine units 1 and 6 of the mature chain, closing part of it into a loop. The record marks a chemical change at one end (amidation). Neither change adds amino-acid units.

Why a database shows 164 units

UniProt P01185 shows a 164-unit precursor named vasopressin-neurophysin 2-copeptin. A precursor is an earlier chain that cells process into separate parts. The record marks units 1 through 19 as a signal peptide, which is removed during processing. Units 20 through 28 become Arg-vasopressin.

The feature list assigns units 32 through 124 to neurophysin II and 126 through 164 to copeptin. Neurophysin II is a carrier protein. Copeptin is another processed peptide. Endotext describes how cells cut the precursor and release these parts. The main sequence header gives the starting chain's length; the feature list identifies each processed piece.

Use the comparison to name the material

Match the name in a source to the corresponding row before using its length. The UniProt entries supply the human sequence positions. Endotext supplies the processing context. Use the Arg-vasopressin row for the title question and the copeptin row when a source names that separate piece.

Names and lengths in reviewed human source records
Named materialWhat the source recordsHow to use the name
Vasopressin precursorUniProt P01185 records one starting chain of 164 amino-acid units.Use 164 for the precursor, not for the released hormone.
Arginine vasopressinThe processed human hormone occupies precursor positions 20 through 28: nine units.Use this row to answer whether mature human vasopressin is a peptide.
Neurophysin IIThe precursor's 93-unit carrier-protein region occupies positions 32 through 124.Keep the carrier region separate from the nine-unit hormone.
CopeptinThis separate precursor-derived peptide occupies positions 126 through 164: 39 units.A copeptin record describes a related piece, not the vasopressin chain.
OxytocinUniProt P01178 records a different nine-unit human hormone at positions 20 through 28.Its length does not make it the same molecule as vasopressin.

Count the mature hormone in UniProt

Open human UniProt entry P01185 and find the Arg-vasopressin feature. It starts at position 20 and ends at 28. Count both endpoints: 28 minus 20 plus 1 equals nine. The extra one includes the starting position. The loop-forming bond and amidated end change the structure without changing this count.

The same method gives 164 minus 126 plus 1 equals 39 for copeptin. These counts come from annotations of the canonical human sequence. For another species or a changed sequence, use that record's own feature endpoints. The calculation does not measure a physical sample.

How vasopressin and oxytocin differ

UniProt P01178 marks oxytocin as a nine-unit human hormone from a separate 125-unit precursor. Endotext reports that mature oxytocin and vasopressin differ at positions 3 and 8. Both records show a loop-forming bond and an amidated end. Their shared length and structural features cannot identify which hormone a source describes. Check the named sequence.

Why copeptin appears beside vasopressin

Endotext explains why researchers can measure copeptin more readily in blood than vasopressin. A paper may discuss copeptin measurements while studying vasopressin release. Check which molecule the researchers measured. The two pieces share a precursor, but the laboratory measurement names copeptin.

The clinical tests described by Endotext use controlled conditions and other measurements. A sequence table supplies none of those conditions. It cannot give a test threshold or interpret one person's result. That question needs the exact test method and clinical context.

What the classification answer leaves open

The reviewed sequence establishes the chemical class of human vasopressin. It cannot verify a manufactured product's contents or effects. A product claim needs the exact product record. For another peptide name, check the species and processed feature in its sequence entry before repeating a length or class claim.

Common questions

Is vasopressin the same as ADH?

Yes. MedlinePlus calls arginine vasopressin antidiuretic hormone (ADH), a name tied to water balance. AVP is a short form of arginine vasopressin.
