Melanocortin peptides

Approval for one product does not prove a different peptide or a tanning or performance claim.

Before you compare

Start with four simple questions.

Use them as you open a peptide record or compare results.

  1. 01

What is the main result this topic can support?

  2. 02

Did the evidence come from people, animals, or cells?

  3. 03

Was the exact product and use tested?

  4. 04

What is still unknown about safety, quality, or personal use?

Exact limit

Approval of one product does not prove another molecule, route, population, or cosmetic claim is supported.

Topic summary

Understand why two approved medicines can have narrow, different uses without proving broad tanning or performance claims.

What these peptides have in common

Three peptides act on melanocortin receptors and end up in very different places. Bremelanotide (PT-141) has an FDA-approved product for one narrow indication. Afamelanotide (Scenesse) has an FDA-approved implant for a rare-disease indication. Melanotan II is graded Insufficient, and its brief records no approved product in any jurisdiction reviewed.

The receptor family is shared; the evidence is not. Two approvals for two specific conditions do not license a general tanning, libido, or performance claim for a third molecule, a different route, or an unapproved product. Each brief states the exact condition and endpoint that was studied.
