The answer depends on the exact peptide, finished product, type of hair loss, comparison group, and result. It also depends on the route, which means how a product enters the body. A skin or wound study cannot give a hair-growth result. A study of a mixture cannot show that its copper peptide caused the result.
The reviewed evidence cannot confirm a hair benefit for most exact products. Copper peptides have a reason they might work and a few early results in people. That is not proof of reliable hair growth. FDA has also raised safety concerns about injected GHK-Cu. Collagen pills are a different product with different evidence.

GHK, GHK-Cu, AHK-Cu, and blends are different.
GHK is a peptide made of three amino acids: glycyl-histidyl-lysine. GHK-Cu is GHK joined to copper(II). Cosmetic labels often call it copper tripeptide-1. AHK-Cu is a different copper peptide made from alanyl-histidyl-lysine. A label that says only “copper peptide” or “peptide blend” might mean one of these. It might also mean several peptides or a mixture that the label does not fully name.
This difference matters because two often-cited hair studies did not test plain GHK-Cu on the skin. A 2007 lab study tested AHK-Cu on human hair roots and cells grown outside the body. A 2016 study in people tested ALAVAX. This is a lab-made complex of 5-aminolevulinic acid and GHK. The reported chemical structure did not show GHK joined to copper. Neither study proves that a copper tripeptide-1 serum will give the same result.
The finished product matters too. Peptides can differ in strength, stability, storage, scalp contact, and other ingredients. These details can change how much reaches the scalp. A shared ingredient name does not make a retail product equal to a study product.

What human hair studies actually show.
The 2007 AHK-Cu study used real human hair roots, but they were outside the body. This type of work is called ex vivo. It also tested cells in a lab, which is called in vitro. During the short test, AHK-Cu made the hair roots longer and increased the number of certain cells.
This work tells us more than a computer model about how AHK-Cu might act. It did not treat people or put a retail product on the scalp. It did not measure visible hair coverage or long-term safety. Calling it a human hair-growth trial hides these limits.
The 2016 ALAVAX study put 45 men with pattern hair loss into three groups. For six months, they used one of two strengths of a 5-aminolevulinic-acid–GHK complex or a placebo. A placebo is an inactive comparison. Hair count rose more in the active groups. The lower-strength group had a change that was unlikely to be due to chance when compared with placebo.
This was an early result in people, but the study was small and included only men. It tested one 5-ALA–GHK complex. It cannot show that GHK, copper, or a retail copper-peptide serum caused the result.
Other studies also tested mixtures. One study put 60 people with patchy hair loss into groups at random. It tested a skin product with copper tripeptide-1, three other lab-made peptides, two milk proteins, and melatonin. Another study gave scalp injections to 1,000 patients. Everyone knew what they received, and there was no comparison group chosen at random. The injections contained copper tripeptide-1, growth factors, and other substances.
These studies can support more research on the full mixtures. They do not show that copper peptide works by itself. A result in people with patchy hair loss also does not prove a benefit for pattern hair loss.

Skin and wound studies do not prove hair regrowth.
GHK-Cu research often discusses collagen, wound repair, blood vessels, and swelling. These processes can matter to skin and hair roots. They are not hair-growth results in people. A cell change, a healed animal wound, or better-looking sun-damaged skin does not show more scalp hair in people with pattern hair loss.
Hair studies can also measure very different results. These include less breakage, a smoother hair shaft, fewer hairs in a pull test, thicker hairs, more mature hairs, or better photo coverage. A cosmetic can make hair look or feel better without changing how a hair root grows. Marketing often calls every one of these changes “growth.”
The type of hair loss matters too. Pattern hair loss, patchy hair loss, sudden shedding, traction hair loss, scarring hair loss, and shaft breakage have different causes. They also need different tests. A result for one type does not prove a benefit for another.

How to read a topical copper-peptide claim.
In the United States, what a product claims to do helps decide whether the law treats it as a cosmetic or a drug. FDA gives restoring hair growth as an example of a drug claim. FDA does not review most cosmetics or cosmetic ingredients before sale. Drugs usually need FDA approval or must follow the rules for drugs sold without a prescription. “Cosmeceutical” is a marketing word, not an FDA category.
A scalp serum can be sold as a cosmetic when its claims stay within cleaning, beauty, conditioning, or appearance. A label might list copper tripeptide-1 as an ingredient. That label does not confirm the identity, amount, useful strength, or delivery to the hair root. It also does not mean FDA reviewed a hair-growth claim. A study logo, patent, supplier paper, or before-and-after photo cannot replace a fair test of the exact product.
The small hair studies also do not show that every copper-peptide serum is safe. Each product can differ in skin irritation, allergy risk, stability, and how it acts with other scalp products. Good tolerance of one study mixture does not prove that every serum with a similar ingredient name is safe.

Oral collagen peptides are a separate question.
Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen broken into small pieces and sold as a food supplement. It is not GHK-Cu taken by mouth. A result about skin collagen also does not show new scalp hair. Digestion, product ingredients, amount, and body target differ from a copper-peptide serum.
Some short studies in people report hair or scalp changes after mixed supplements. These products can contain collagen, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, or plant ingredients. Such studies cannot show which ingredient caused a change. Some mainly measure skin or how healthy the hair looks, not a diagnosed hair-loss problem.
A 2024 study tested a branded collagen and vitamin C product. Experts rated the hair as looking healthier. Yet the change in counted hairs was not clearly different between the groups. Every listed author worked with the product company.
A 2023 study tested marine collagen with amino acids, iron, and selenium. People used it along with treatment chosen for their type of hair loss. The study did not test collagen by itself. Two authors worked for the supplement company. Neither study shows that collagen peptide alone treats pattern hair loss.
FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before sale. A Supplement Facts panel or required label note is not a hair-growth approval. Be more careful when a supplement claims to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent a hair-loss disease.

Injected and research-labeled GHK-Cu have different safety questions.
A history of use on the skin cannot show that an injection is safe. An injected product must be free of germs. It must also control harmful material from bacteria, peptide clumps, unwanted chemicals, and the amount in each dose. Injection can expose the whole body and can cause an immune response. A vial marked “research use only” is not a drug that FDA reviewed for use in people. A lab purity paper does not show that the product is safe or effective.
FDA's current compounding safety page lists GHK-Cu for injection among bulk drug substances that may pose serious safety risks. FDA says compounded injections might cause an immune response. It points to peptide clumps, unwanted chemicals, and limited human data. In May 2026, FDA listed non-injectable GHK-Cu as a Category 1 bulk substance under evaluation for section 503A. Category 1 means FDA is still reviewing the substance. It does not mean approved, proven for hair growth, or finally accepted for compounding.
The large scalp-injection report does not settle these questions. It tested a sterile mixture with growth factors, thymosin beta-4, and copper tripeptide-1. Sterile means made to be free of living germs. People received repeat procedures, but chance did not assign them to a comparison group. Even if the mixture gave a useful result, it cannot show that injected GHK-Cu alone caused it. It also cannot show the risks of separate vials sold elsewhere.

The cause of hair loss matters more than a popular ingredient. Slow pattern thinning, sudden shedding, clear patches, scalp pain, broken hairs, and scars are not the same problem. The current label for minoxidil used on the skin gives an example. It tells people not to use the product when hair loss is sudden or patchy, the cause is unknown, or the scalp is red or painful. Shopping by ingredient can miss the real problem.
Strong product evidence names the active ingredient, strength, route, group of people, warnings, directions, study length, and measured result. Copper-peptide marketing often gives only a story about the ingredient. When the exact product, condition, and result do not match the study, the evidence cannot confirm the hair benefit.

Copper peptides belong in the research map, but the product still matters. AHK-Cu made human hair roots grow during a short test outside the body. One small study in people tested a 5-ALA–GHK complex. Other studies tested mixtures. These are early results. None shows that a retail GHK-Cu serum or injected GHK-Cu reliably regrows hair.
For skin products, separate claims about appearance from claims to regrow hair. Then ask for a study of the finished product. For collagen taken by mouth, look for hair results from the full formula.
